|Delicious and Berry Good for You
Buy local, buy healthy with fresh Wisconsin cherries and berries this summer, and you just might live longer and sleep better, says agricultural ambassador Ashley Huibregtse. And what's good for you is good for Wisconsin, too.
"When you buy local, you get fruits at their peak freshness, you support our state's producers and communities, and you get sweet treats that are good for you and your family," says Huibregtse, Wisconsin's 61st Alice in Dairyland.
Tart cherries and blueberries are recognized by nutrition experts as "super fruits," offering disease-fighting potential because they contain antioxidants, including melatonin, which also may make you sleep better. Add their vitamins and minerals and it's hard to beat berries and cherries for nutritional value.
It's hard to beat them for versatility and ease of preparation, too.
"Cherries and berries make a delicious snack, a colorful and healthy layer in a yogurt parfait, or a tangy sweet cheesecake topping," Huibregtse says. "You can find fruit salsas and our Wisconsin cheesemakers are even adding fruits to some of our 600 kinds of cheese. You can top a salad, or toast a summer sunset with a Wisconsin fruit wine."
That makes it easy to get your recommended four half-cup servings of fruit every day. And best of all, you can keep on enjoying the summer all year long with frozen, dried or juiced Wisconsin fruits.
