Wisconsin’s Summers are Berry Delicious

Bookmark and Share

The ripe, red delicacies of summer are ready to be picked, eaten, jammed and enjoyed.  While Wisconsin is an abundant source of other decadent fruit and summer produce, now is the perfect time to think about our favorite berry - Strawberries.

With just over 750 acres used to produce strawberries in Wisconsin, it may come as a surprise that right in our own borders we produce over 4.3 million pounds of strawberries.  That’s almost 3 tons of succulent strawberries per acre – That’s a lot of picking!

Find ways to enjoy some fresh air and summer flavors by heading out to a roadside stand, the farmer’s market, or have family fun at a you-pick operation near home.  Make a sweet connection to wonderful product and a local producer in your area when you pick-your-own or buy pre-picked strawberries to support the local economy and increase community relationships.

Strawberries across Central and Southern Wisconsin are in their prime, while strawberries in Northern Wisconsin are getting geared-up for picking to start in early July.  Enjoy these decadents and feel healthy as a half cup serving is an excellent source of calcium, phosphorus, potassium, Vitamin A and Vitamin C; and the berries contain virtually no fat, cholesterol, or salt.
