Apples & Pumpkin Picking for Pies
Fall’s harvest is yielding the perfect ingredients to make decadent baked goods fresh from your kitchen to the dining table!
Get ready for family get-togethers, potlucks, special occasions and the upcoming cool weather with a warm, right from the oven treat. From pies to bars, muffins and bread, along with many other pastry perfections; pumpkins and apples are a great choice to bring home. Plus you can find these local gems across the state at u-pick farms, roadside stands, grocery stores, farmers’ markets, and much more.
Matching the changing leaves are apples in hues of reds, yellows, and greens dotting the trees. Baking apples don’t need to be red to be ready for use; in fact, the best way to tell if an apple is ready is to check the skin and make sure it is smooth. Across Wisconsin there are 300 orchards yielding over 60 million pounds of fruit in a hundred varieties.
Fresh from the patch are pumpkins perfect for making treats. With over 900 farms across the state there’s a producer close to you. To select a pumpkin, find one that feels solid and heavy for its size with a stem that’s firmly attached. Use sweet and refined varieties for baked goods like pies and bread. Not only can you use the orange flesh for great tasting recipes, but you can toast pumpkin seeds for a healthy snack!
