Strawberry Nutrition, Selection, Storage and Availability
Strawberries contain healthy amounts of Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Potassium, and fiber, and no fat or cholesterol. When picking strawberries, check to see that the green stem cap is still attached. Berries should be deep-colored, firm, and plump. If buying pre-picked strawberries, they should be dry and clean. Avoid strawberries that have uncolored spots or large seedy areas. Strawberries should be protected from sun after picking and refrigerated in loosely covered containers at 32-40 degrees F. Strawberries shouldn't be washed until just before using, and generally stay fresh 2-3 days. Strawberries can be stored long term frozen with proper preparation. Fresh Strawberries are available in Wisconsin from mid-June through July.

Strawberries were first cultivated in Rome, and documented in France in the 13th century as a medicinal herb. The first introduction to the U.S. was approximately 1835. Americans love the fruit -- it's grown in every state in the U.S.! Strawberries are the most frequently home-grown fruit in Wisconsin. You can find the fruit at pick-your-own farms, farm stands, farmers markets and retail markets throughout the state.
